How to Slay the Giant: Procrastination

How to Slay the Giant: Procrastination
Blog

We are all guilty of it, at some time or the other. We put off our exercise routine until tomorrow; we continually delay finishing that project, writing that training manual or starting that business.

Procrastination is the mother of all demons and can literally stop you in your tracks from achieving all that you desire.

Here are Four effective processes you can use to slay this giant.

One: “Suck It Up Cupcake”

“Suck it up Cupcake”! Just close your eyes, hold your breath and jump right in! Putting things off until the last minute is a terrible habit and like all habits, is ingrained in our subconscious mind and becomes harder and harder to break, the more we repreat it, the more it feels like the normal thing to do and we simply continue along our path, forging the habit and repeating the same pattern.

Two: Take Small Steps

Sometimes we procrastinate because  we feel intimated or tormented by the task. Perhaps we have no possible idea on where or how to start. In these cases, it is perfectly acceptable to take it one step at a time.

Break the task down into smaller, manageable tasks and tackle them one at a time.

Lets say for example, you are preparing a business plan and for the upteenth time this week you’ve turned on your PC and looked at the blank screen, only to realize  you need to do some more research before you can actually start …you’re still not ready. Simply break down the project or task into smaller pieces and complete each bit separately. Make each task an individual project and after completion of each one, mark them as done, celebrate and acknowledge your achievement.

Three: Forget it

Why force the issue? If you have been ‘dragging your feet’ on something for quite some time, it may be for the best! Something, somewhere is trying to tell you something. That something is your intuition (subconscious/unconscious mind) and it is always right!

Think about something that you have been putting off again and again and again.

Ask yourself:

What are the reasons for you needing to complete this task in the first place?

Does someone else want you to do it?

What is THEIR agenda?

What are YOUR reasons for this lengthy delay?

I find it amazing that 99.9% of the time I put off doing something, I am eventually grateful I did!

However, disregarding a project or task after a long period of procrastination is usually the last resort.

Four: “No Man is an Island”

Nobody is truly unreliant on others, its okay to rely on the company and comfort of others in order to thrive and achieve success. So, be honest with yourself and ask for help! Maybe, you put off tasks because you feel that they are too big and complex for you to handle alone? Maybe you need some help getting it done!  There are plenty of resources available that can provide you with what you need. If you’re a solo-professional and you put off answering emails, then consider hiring an assistant, find a student or school leaver that wants to gain experience or maybe get a family member to help.

Procrastinating on life changing activities could be the result of Fear, Fear of Failure, Fear of Success, Fear of Rejection or even just a Fear of the unknown. 1. Wow that was unusual. I just wrote an extremely long comment but after I clicked submit my comment didn’t appear. Grrrr… well I’m not writing all that over again. Anyways, just wanted to say fantastic blog!

  2. With almost everything which seems to be building within this area, all your points of view tend to be quite exciting. However, I appologize, because I do not give credence to your whole strategy, all be it refreshing none the less. It seems to me that your opinions are generally not entirely justified and in simple fact you are your self not even thoroughly confident of the point. In any case I did appreciate examining it.

  3. Hi! This post could not be written any better! Reading through this post reminds me of my previous room mate! He always kept talking about this. I will forward this article to him. Pretty sure he will have a good read. Thanks for sharing!
