THEN
Migliarina Wines was founded by Carsten Migliarina in 2002 when he produced his first wine under his own label. Starting very small, the first production consisted of a Sauvignon Blanc and a Shiraz, both from Franschhoek. The Shiraz was matured in a friends garage.“Often at tastings I am asked “where are you” in the context of where my estate is, my reply “right in front of you”. I do not own a wine farm, I am not unhappy about this as it allows me the freedom to source the best grapes from the best vineyards I can find.”

NOW
The Migliarina Wines range has expanded considerably since the first production in 2002. Currently cultivars include Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Grenache, Riesling and Shiraz. Grapes are sourced from around the Western Cape and wine is produced in rented cellar space in two different boutique cellars.

Wines are exported to Namibia, Reunion, Europe, Australia, the USA and China and are sold locally in top restaurants and specialised wine shops.

WINEMAKING
Elegant clean wines are the hallmark of the Migliarina brand. All wines are individually hand crafted from some of the best vineyards in the Cape region with exceptional care being taken in preserving varietal and fruit character. Keeping it simple in the cellar with minimum intervention is the basis for ensuring that the wines are fruit driven and elegant.

“Winemaking is a creative process and having an established range of wines limits you in some aspects. I therefore try to make one new wine from a different varietal each year, allowing me the freedom to express my creativity.”

ABOUT CARSTEN
Born in Namibia and raised in South-Africa, Carsten’s interest in all things wine started at the tender age of 14 when he attempted to ferment table grapes. Pursuing his passion for wine, he spent 10 years in the catering industry as sommelier, including Le Pont de la Tour in London and the Grande Roche in Paarl and then earned his winemaking stripes as contract winemaker in South-Africa, Germany and Romania and of course making his own wine. His most recent winemaking adventure took him to China, where he participated in the Ningxia Wine Challenge.

“I did not study winemaking, I have been very fortunate to meet fantastic winemakers willing to share their knowledge and I have been thrown in the deep end quite a few times. If you are passionate about what you do and if you are willing to work hard, you can succeed in this industry.”
